How to Calculate AHP — Step by Step

Step 1: Define the Goal

Break the goal down into a hierarchy: the main goal at the top, the criteria (and sub-criteria, if needed) in the middle, and the alternatives being evaluated at the bottom.

Step 3: Compare Criteria in Pairs

Compare every criterion against every other criterion, one pair at a time, using Saaty's 1–9 scale to judge how much more important one is than the other.

Step 4: Calculate Criteria Weights

Convert the pairwise comparison matrix into a set of priority weights, showing how much each criterion contributes to the overall goal.

Step 5: Check Consistency

Calculate the consistency ratio to verify that the judgments don't contradict each other — for example, ranking A over B, B over C, but then C over A. A ratio above the acceptable threshold means the comparisons should be revisited.

Step 6: Compare Alternatives for Each Criterion

Repeat the pairwise comparison process, but this time compare all the alternatives against each other, separately for every criterion in the hierarchy.
